Children’s stories have a special magic the ability to turn fear into laughter, curiosity into courage, and simple moments into unforgettable adventures. The Mystery of the Haunted Tree does exactly that, transporting readers to Sambhar village, where a haunted tree, five brave friends, and a trail of secrets come together in an adventure full of suspense, humour, and heart.
In this conversation, author Apoorva Sharma opens up about the inspiration behind the story, the memories that shaped Sambhar village, and the creative journey of writing a children’s adventure that feels both thrilling and deeply warm. Let’s step into this world and hear from the storyteller herself.
Q1. Congratulations on the launch! How does it feel to finally see The Mystery of the Haunted Tree out in the world and in the hands of readers?
It feels surreal and deeply satisfying. What began as a small idea in my mind has now become a real book that children can hold, read, and imagine with. Seeing young readers connect with the story makes every effort worthwhile.
“That sense of fulfillment really comes through there’s something incredibly special about watching an idea grow into a story that finds its readers.”
Q2. The story turns fear into fun. What inspired you to build a fictional world for children and write a children’s adventure book?
The story turns fear into fun because, in real life, I am very connected to children and I still feel that there is a child alive inside me. I wanted to express that playful, curious, and slightly mischievous side through my writing. Creating a fictional world for children allowed me to relive the joy of adventures, secret explorations, and innocent fears that turn into excitement. I hoped that today’s children would see themselves in this world, enjoy the fun, and connect with the same sense of wonder and mischief that I once felt and still do.
“That inner child clearly shines through the story it’s easy to see why young readers would feel instantly at home in this world.”
Q3. Sambhar village feels vivid and alive. Is it inspired by a real place or memories from your own childhood?
Sambhar is a real place, and it holds a very special place in my heart. It is my father’s hometown, and many of my childhood memories are rooted there.
“That personal connection explains the richness of the setting Sambhar feels less like a backdrop and more like a living presence in the story.”
Q4. The book balances suspense, humour, and heart beautifully. Was this mix intentional from the start, or did it evolve as you wrote?
The balance evolved naturally. I knew I wanted mystery, but as the characters came alive, humour and emotions followed. Children relate best when they can laugh, feel brave, and feel connected all at once.
“That natural evolution really works the emotional rhythm of the story feels effortless and genuine.”
Q5. The five friends in your book share a strong bond. Did any of the characters come naturally to you, or is one especially close to your heart?
All of them feel like pieces of real childhood friendships. One may be braver, another funnier, another more thoughtful but together they reflect the magic of friendship. It’s their teamwork that makes them special to me.
“Their friendship is definitely one of the most charming parts of the book it’s easy to see readers picking a favorite while loving them all together.”
Q6. The haunted tree almost feels like a character itself. Beneath the fun, the story hides deeper themes of courage and curiosity. What message do you hope young readers take away?
I hope children learn that fear often hides something wonderful, that asking questions is powerful, and that courage doesn’t mean being fearless it means moving forward despite fear.
“That’s a powerful message, especially for young readers learning to navigate their own fears and questions.”
Q7. As someone who loves animation, do you visualize your scenes before writing them? Did that influence the way this story unfolded?
Yes, I see the scenes like a movie playing in my mind. This helped in describing expressions, movements, and atmosphere, making the story more cinematic and engaging for young readers.
“That cinematic quality is unmistakable it’s easy to imagine these scenes leaping off the page and onto the screen.”
Q8. What was the most enjoyable or challenging moment while writing this book?
The most challenging and at the same time the most satisfying part of writing the book was creating the ending. I wanted the conclusion to feel smooth, natural, and emotionally fulfilling, so that the adventure would settle gently in the reader’s heart. Bringing all the excitement, mystery, and emotions together in a way that felt completely took the most thought and care.
“Endings are never easy, but when done right, they leave a lasting impression and this one certainly does.”
Q9. How was your publishing experience? Do you have any suggestions for authors writing books for children?
The journey taught me patience and faith in my story. For children’s authors, my advice is simple: write with honesty, respect young readers’ intelligence, and never underestimate the power of imagination.
“That’s advice worth holding onto not just for writers, but for anyone creating for young minds.”
Q10. Now that The Mystery of the Haunted Tree has taken its first flight, what’s next for you? Can readers expect more adventures soon?
Absolutely. This is just the beginning. More mysteries, more friendships, and more magical adventures are on the way. The world of Sambhar still has many secrets waiting to be discovered.
“That’s exciting news and a promise readers will surely be eager to hold you to.”
The Mystery of the Haunted Tree is more than a ghostly adventure it’s a celebration of curiosity, friendship, and the courage it takes to face the unknown. Through Sambhar village, five unforgettable friends, and a haunted tree that holds more than meets the eye, Apoorva Sharma reminds us that the scariest stories often hide the brightest joys.
